Sermon Recap Questions (6/14)

Read Mark 10:17-20

  1. This account of Jesus and the rich young ruler is recorded by Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Why do you think this event made such a deep impression on the gospel writers?

  2. Why did Jesus say to the young man, “Why do you call me Good, only God is truly good?”

  3. This young rich man seemingly had it all and yet he’s on his knees before Jesus asking how to receive eternal life. What do you think drove him to Jesus?

  4. Why did Jesus list six commandments that were horizontal rather than vertical? What was he getting?

  5. It’s obvious in the young man’s question to Jesus he believes he needs to do something to receive eternal life. Steve mentioned that a large majority of people believe that. Why do you think this is the case?

  6. Just so we are all on the same page, according to scripture what must people do to receive eternal life?

  7. The young man said I have kept all the commandments Jesus listed. He was in essence saying, “I’m a good person” but was he? What is obviously missing from this man’s description of his goodness?

Read Mark 10:21-22

  1. Jesus didn’t condemn the young man for being rich and yet a lot of people have a strong dislike for rich people. Why do you think that is?

  2. Mark says Jesus genuinely loved this man. Jesus wasn’t being cruel in asking him to sell his possessions and give them to the poor. Jesus said there is one thing you haven’t done. What is it that he hadn’t done?

  3. Jesus was trying to shift this man’s thinking from don’t do harm to others to use your wealth to do good for others. If you grew up in church was there more emphasis on what not to do or what to do as a Jesus follower?

  4. Bible commentator Warren Weiresbe says, “Money is a marvelous servant but a terrible master.” What does he mean by this?

  5. If Jesus lovingly put his finger on one area of your life and said, “This has to go if you are going to follow me,” what do you suspect it would be?

Read Mark 10:23-27

  1. Why were the disciples so shocked when Jesus said it’s hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God?

  2. Steve talked about how wealth creates a powerful allusion. Name some of the things we believe wealth will give us.

  3. Read Mark 10:28-31

  4. Our current culture is very affluent compared to many other countries around the world. Do you think this encourages our faith or does it weaken it to some degree?

  5. Do you ever think about the reward Jesus promises us if we follow him and surrender to him? Why or why not?

  6. Jesus said in the next life the scoreboard of the world will be reversed. The first will be last and the last will be first. How does this make you feel? What kind of people might not like hearing this?
