A Shocking Encounter (Sermon Blog)

What would happen if Jesus asked you to give up the one thing you value most?

In Mark 10, Jesus encounters a man who seems to have everything going for him. He is rich, successful, respected, and morally upright. Yet despite all he has accomplished, something is still missing.

This shocking encounter reveals a timeless truth:

👉 Following Jesus requires more than good behavior—it requires complete surrender.

1. A Sincere Question with Shallow Theology

The Rich Young Ruler's Question

The man approaches Jesus with urgency:

"What must I do to inherit eternal life?"

At first glance, it seems like a great question.

But hidden within it is a faulty assumption:

  • Salvation can be earned.

  • Eternal life is something we achieve.

  • Good behavior is enough.

The man believed he could do enough good things to secure his future with God.

More Than Rule-Keeping

Jesus reminds him of several commandments, and the man confidently responds:

"I've kept all of these since I was young."

Yet something is still missing.

Why?

Because Christianity is not merely about avoiding bad things.

Jesus calls us to:

  • Love people actively

  • Show mercy

  • Bring peace

  • Serve others

  • Follow Him wholeheartedly

The goal isn't simply being a "good person."

👉 The goal is knowing Jesus.

2. A Loving Diagnosis That Exposes an Idol

Jesus Sees the Real Problem

The text tells us something important:

"Jesus looked at him and loved him."

Jesus wasn't trying to shame this man.

He was trying to free him.

That's why He says:

"Sell your possessions, give to the poor, and follow me."

The Real Issue Wasn't Money

Jesus wasn't condemning wealth.

The problem was that wealth had become this man's functional god.

His money represented:

  • Security

  • Status

  • Identity

  • Control

The thing he possessed had actually begun to possess him.

The Question We Must Ask

The rich young ruler walked away sad because he wasn't willing to surrender what mattered most to him.

That raises an important question:

👉 If Jesus put His finger on one area of your life and said, "This has to go," what would it be?

3. The Gospel Is Impossible Without Grace

The Disciples Were Shocked

When Jesus says:

"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God,"

the disciples are stunned.

In their culture, wealth was often viewed as evidence of God's favor.

If a wealthy person couldn't make it, who could?

Jesus' Answer

Jesus responds:

"With man this is impossible, but not with God."

This is the heart of the Gospel.

None of us can earn salvation.

None of us can achieve enough goodness.

None of us can save ourselves.

👉 Salvation is a gift of God's grace.

The impossible becomes possible because of Jesus.

4. Jesus Redefines Success and Reward

Peter's Question

Peter speaks up:

"We've left everything to follow You."

In other words:

"Was it worth it?"

Jesus' Promise

Jesus assures His followers that whatever they give up for Him will be repaid far beyond what they could imagine.

Not only in eternity, but through the blessings of belonging to God's family right now.

Following Jesus may involve:

  • Sacrifice

  • Discomfort

  • Loss

  • Persecution

But it also brings:

  • Purpose

  • Community

  • Joy

  • Eternal life

The Great Reversal

Jesus concludes with a surprising statement:

"The first will be last, and the last will be first."

The world's scoreboard values:

  • Wealth

  • Fame

  • Status

  • Power

God's Kingdom values:

  • Faithfulness

  • Humility

  • Generosity

  • Service

One day, the scoreboard will be reversed.

Final Takeaways

1. Good Behavior Isn't Enough

Christianity is more than keeping rules—it is following Jesus.

2. Jesus Loves Us Enough to Confront Our Idols

Whatever competes with God for first place in our hearts must be surrendered.

3. Salvation Is a Gift of Grace

What is impossible for us becomes possible through God.

4. True Riches Are Found in Christ

The greatest rewards are not possessions, but a relationship with Jesus and life in His Kingdom.

Final Thought

The rich young ruler came looking for life.

The answer was standing right in front of him.

Sadly, he walked away.

The challenge of this story is simple:

👉 Will we surrender whatever stands between us and Jesus—or will we walk away too?

Pastor Steve will continue to Part 10 of The Book of Mark this Sunday. We hope you'll join us as we continue exploring the life and teachings of Jesus together.
