What I Learned On A Bicycle Tour

I usually go surfing on Monday mornings, but I received an invitation to go on a bicycle tour yesterday, so I changed my plans. Miguel, who is like a son to me, invited me and McKenzie, my son Caleb’s girlfriend, to join him for a 35-mile ride from Point Loma to Coronado Island and back.

As we made our way from Rosecrans Street to the tourist harbor area, I saw a lot of sights I was familiar with as we passed the Star of India, the Midway, and Seaport Village. Soon we were passing through an industrial section of the city I was unfamiliar with. I saw a sea of hard hats and people busy at work. Next up was the San Diego Salt Company. There were heaps of salt next to pinkish-colored ponds where the salt was crystallizing. I had no idea that some of our salt comes from San Diego. Miguel took us to a new park in San Diego called Pepper Park. If you get a chance, you should check it out. From there we traveled along interesting waterways and eventually made our way to the Silver Strand.

All along the way Miguel pointed out little things I had never noticed before. I’m sure I’ve driven my car past some of the places we rode through, but I was actually seeing them for the first time. We saw estuaries filled with birds and state beaches I had never noticed before. We ended up at the Hotel Del Coronado. After a short tour around the hotel, we headed over to the ferry to cross back over to the city. It turned out to be a day of fun and discovery.

By now you are probably wondering where I’m going with this?

On the bicycle tour I realized I was seeing some things that were new to me, but also a lot of things I had passed by through the years and never noticed before. I think reading the Bible is a lot like doing a bicycle tour.

Every time we open up the Bible and read it, we are bound to see new things and, in many cases, things we have read before but didn’t really see or understand. Until my dying breath I will continue to encourage people to read the Bible because in so many ways it’s like Miguel’s bicycle tour.

Do you have a daily Bible plan? If not, we can help you get started. Do you struggle with understanding the Bible? Are you bored by the Bible like so many people have told me? Maybe it’s because you have never slowed down enough to really see it. Let me just say there is an abundance of Bible support programs online. Even Google will generally provide you with accurate information.

It’s summertime, the perfect time to go on a bicycle tour or a Bible tour. Read the Bible, you will be glad you did!

Stay close to Jesus,

Steve
