The Storm After The Storm (Sermon Blog)

Last week, we saw Jesus calm a literal storm on the Sea of Galilee.

But sometimes…

👉 The storm doesn’t end—it just changes.

In Mark 5:1–20, the disciples step onto land expecting relief…
only to encounter a different kind of storm.

👉 Not waves and wind—but darkness and brokenness

1. There Is a Spiritual Battle We Don’t Always See

The “Fourth Dimension”

We often think life is just what we can see:

  • Physical

  • Tangible

  • Observable

But Scripture reveals something deeper:

👉 There is a spiritual reality behind what we experience

  • A battle between light and darkness

  • A struggle beyond what’s visible

The Man in the Tombs

When Jesus arrives, He meets a man:

  • Isolated from everyone

  • Living among the dead

  • Out of control and self-destructive

  • Unable to be restrained

👉 A life completely overwhelmed by darkness

What’s Really Behind the Chains?

The message is clear:

👉 Satan is the enemy behind the chains

  • He isolates

  • He dehumanizes

  • He enslaves

  • He destroys

As Jesus said:

“The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy”

A Modern Reflection

This isn’t just an ancient story.

We see similar patterns today:

  • Increasing isolation

  • Loss of identity

  • Addiction and bondage

  • Mental and emotional brokenness

👉 The battle is still real

2. The World Can Contain Problems—But Not Cure Them

Society’s Response

The people tried to manage the man:

  • Chaining him

  • Isolating him

  • Keeping distance

👉 But they couldn’t heal him

The Same Struggle Today

Our culture often tries to fix deep problems through:

  • Medication

  • Education

  • Legislation

These can help…

👉 But they don’t always address the root issue

The Deeper Problem

Scripture reminds us:

“We do not wrestle against flesh and blood…”

👉 The struggle is spiritual

  • Behind behaviors

  • Behind systems

  • Behind brokenness

Why This Matters

If we only treat symptoms:

👉 We miss true transformation

Only Jesus can:

  • Restore identity

  • Break chains

  • Heal the heart

3. Jesus Is the Only One Who Can Truly Restore

The Encounter

When the man meets Jesus:

  • He falls at His feet

  • Darkness is confronted by light

  • The power of Jesus is revealed

👉 Darkness cannot stand against Jesus

Total Transformation

After Jesus intervenes:

  • The man is clothed

  • He is in his right mind

  • He is restored to community

  • He regains his identity

👉 From broken → to restored

A Surprising Response

Instead of celebrating…

The people ask Jesus to leave.

Why?

  • His power disrupted their comfort

  • His authority exposed their limitations

  • Change felt too costly

👉 Sometimes people prefer familiar brokenness over real healing

4. Your Story Has a Purpose

A New Mission

The restored man wants to follow Jesus.

But Jesus tells him:

👉 “Go home… and tell your story”

The First Missionary

This man becomes:

  • A witness

  • A messenger

  • A testimony of God’s power

👉 His story becomes his ministry

What This Means for Us

You don’t need:

  • A theology degree

  • Perfect knowledge

  • All the answers

👉 You just need your story

  • What Jesus has done

  • How He changed you

  • How He met you in your storm

Final Takeaways

1. Not All Storms Are Visible

Some of the biggest battles are spiritual.

2. Darkness Is Real—But Not Ultimate

There is an enemy, but Jesus is greater.

3. Jesus Brings True Freedom

What the world cannot fix, Jesus can restore.

4. Your Story Matters

Your testimony can impact others in powerful ways.

Final Thought

After the storm… there may be another battle.

But here’s the hope:

👉 Jesus has authority over every storm—seen and unseen.

Pastor Steve will continue to part 7 of The Book of Mark this Sunday.
