Read Mark 5:1-20
C.S. Lewis says Satan is pleased if people don’t believe in him or if people are obsessed with him. Between those two extremes, which way do you lean and why?
As a result of being demon possessed this tortured man was isolated from his family, friends, and community. Isolation is becoming a serious problem in our society today. How can the church help people become less isolated? How did the covid pandemic play into our isolation problem?
As a result of being demon possessed this man was dehumanized. He lost all sense of his identity. It seems more and more people are struggling with their identity. Has anyone ever asked you how you identify? How would you answer that question? What do you think is causing the identity crisis? Do you think Satan is involved? Why or why not?
The demoniac was enslaved. He was out of control. How are people being enslaved today in our culture? Is this a ploy by the enemy? See John 10:10.
Why did the demons beg Jesus to not send them out of the area? In Luke's account the legion of demons begged Jesus to not send them into the abyss. What is the abyss and why did the demons fear it?
Why do you think Jesus sent the demons into the pigs?
The Bible does not tell us how this man became demonized. There are a lot of paths that can lead a person towards being demonized. Can you think of some things that could lead a person down the path of being controlled by demons?
Steve mentioned that his Mother was in the occult. What occult practices are you familiar with? Have your group compile a list.
The community the demonized man came from didn’t know what to do with him except keep him away from people. Today our society is filled with people who are not in control of their lives and are pushed to the fringes of society. Jesus had compassion on these kinds of people. How can we show compassion to people like this?
Read Ephesians 6:12. How does this passage play into the grand scheme of what’s happening in the world today?

Why do you think the people asked Jesus to leave their region after he healed the demoniac?
Steve made the statement that a culture can be more comfortable with the bondage it understands than a saviour, (Jesus) that it can’t control. How do you feel about that statement?
Our culture is desperately trying to fix the problems of society by medicating people, educating people, and through legislation. From a Christaisn perspective where is society coming up short?
After Jesus restored the demoniac he was so grateful he wanted to follow Jesus but Jesus said, “No, go back to your own people and tell them how much God has done for you.”He became the first missionary to the Gentiles.” Have you told your salvation story to anyone lately?
