How Should We Handle Injustice? (sermon Blog)

At some point in life, every one of us will face injustice.

  • Being falsely accused

  • Being overlooked or treated unfairly

  • Experiencing betrayal

  • Suffering for doing the right thing

No one escapes life without wounds.

So the real question isn’t if injustice will happen…
It’s how we respond when it does—especially as followers of Jesus.

In History Part 8, Pastor Steve walks us through the life of Joseph in Genesis, showing us what it looks like to respond to injustice in a God-honoring way.

Joseph’s Story: A Life Marked by Injustice

Joseph’s life begins with promise—but quickly turns into pain.

  • He is his father’s favorite son

  • His brothers become jealous and resentful

  • He is betrayed, attacked, and sold into slavery

  • Later, he is falsely accused and thrown into prison

Joseph didn’t deserve any of it.

Yet his story becomes one of the clearest biblical examples of how to handle injustice with faith.

How Should We Handle Injustice?

From Joseph’s life, we learn several powerful principles.

1. When Wronged, Stay Faithful—Not Bitter

Joseph had every reason to become bitter.

  • Betrayed by his own brothers

  • Stripped of his identity and freedom

  • Lied about and falsely accused

Yet instead of becoming angry or resentful, Joseph chose to remain faithful to God.

This is one of the hardest responses for us.

When injustice happens, our natural reaction is:

  • “I’ll get even”

  • “They deserve what’s coming”

  • “Why is this happening to me?”

But Joseph shows us a different path:

👉 Faithfulness over bitterness

2. Don’t Compromise Your Values—Even When It Costs You

While serving in Potiphar’s house, Joseph is tempted repeatedly by Potiphar’s wife.

He had every excuse to give in:

  • He had suffered greatly

  • He was far from home

  • No one would have known

But Joseph refused.

“How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a sin against God.”

Because of his integrity, he is falsely accused and thrown into prison.

This teaches us a difficult truth:

👉 Doing the right thing doesn’t always lead to immediate reward

Sometimes it leads to more hardship.

But faithfulness to God is never wasted.

3. Be Faithful Where You Are

Even as a slave—and later as a prisoner—Joseph gave his best.

  • He worked diligently

  • He earned trust and responsibility

  • He honored God in every situation

Eventually:

  • He was put in charge of Potiphar’s household

  • Then placed in charge of the prison

This reveals a key principle:

👉 Steward where you are, not where you wish you were

Even in difficult seasons, God can use your faithfulness right where you are.

4. Remember: God Is With You

One phrase repeats throughout Joseph’s story:

“The Lord was with Joseph.”

Even when:

  • He was betrayed

  • He was enslaved

  • He was imprisoned

God had not abandoned him.

In moments of injustice, we often ask:

  • “Why is this happening?”

  • “Did I do something wrong?”

  • “Has God forgotten me?”

But Scripture reminds us:

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)

Even when we don’t see it—God is working behind the scenes.

5. Hold On to Hope—Even When You Can’t See It

Joseph spent years in prison after doing the right thing.

  • He helped others

  • He interpreted dreams

  • He asked to be remembered

And then… nothing.

For two full years, he was forgotten.

This is where many people lose hope.

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick.” (Proverbs 13:12)

But Joseph held on.

And at just the right time:

  • Pharaoh had a troubling dream

  • Joseph was called from prison

  • He interpreted the dream

  • And in a single moment…

👉 He was elevated to second in command over all Egypt

God Is Working—Even When You Can’t See It

Joseph couldn’t see what God was doing behind the scenes.

But God was:

  • Positioning him

  • Preparing him

  • Developing his character

What looked like setbacks were actually setups for something greater.

Sometimes the path God takes us on:

  • Feels confusing

  • Feels painful

  • Feels unfair

But on the other side, we often discover:

👉 God was leading us somewhere better all along.

What About You?

Maybe you’re walking through injustice right now.

  • Something unfair happened

  • You didn’t deserve it

  • You don’t understand it

Joseph’s story reminds us:

  • Don’t become bitter

  • Don’t compromise your values

  • Stay faithful where you are

  • Trust that God is with you

  • Hold on to hope

Because even when you can’t see it…

👉 God is still working.
