Gnarly Storm (Sermon Blog)
Life can feel a lot like chaos.
Unexpected moments. Sudden crises. Things completely out of our control.
👉 Storms don’t ask for permission—they just show up.
In Mark 4:35–41, we see one of the most powerful moments in Jesus’ ministry—a literal storm that reveals a deeper truth about faith, fear, and who Jesus really is.
1. Storms Are Inevitable
Life Is Full of “Gnarly Storms”
Jesus and His disciples set out on the Sea of Galilee after a long, successful day of ministry. Everything seemed calm…
Until suddenly:
A fierce storm rises
Waves crash into the boat
Water begins filling it
Even experienced fishermen were terrified.
👉 This wasn’t a normal storm—it was overwhelming
Storms We Face Today
We may not face literal waves, but we all face storms:
Relationship struggles
Financial pressure
Health issues
Career disappointments
Fear and uncertainty
👉 Storms are part of life—not a sign something is wrong
A Key Truth
Sometimes:
The storm comes after a good season
The storm comes unexpectedly
The storm comes even when you’re following Jesus
👉 Following Jesus doesn’t mean avoiding storms
2. Jesus Is With Us in the Storm
The Surprising Scene
In the middle of chaos…
👉 Jesus is asleep
The disciples panic and cry out:
“Don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”
Sound familiar?
When God Feels Silent
In our storms, we often feel:
“God, where are You?”
“Why aren’t You doing something?”
“Do You even care?”
👉 It can feel like Jesus is asleep
But Here’s the Reality
Jesus was in the boat
He never left them
He was fully aware
👉 Presence matters more than perception
Even when it feels like He’s absent…
👉 He is still with you
3. Jesus Will Get Us Through the Storm
The Turning Point
Jesus wakes up and speaks:
“Silence, be still.”
And instantly:
The wind stops
The waves calm
Everything becomes still
👉 Complete peace—just like that
Then Jesus Asks a Question
“Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
Not condemnation…
👉 But a challenge
What We Often Forget
When a new storm hits:
We panic
We fear
We forget
👉 We forget that God has already brought us through before
Faith in the Storm
Faith doesn’t mean:
There won’t be storms
Faith means:
👉 Trusting Jesus in the middle of them
4. Jesus Is the Master of the Storm
The Disciples’ Realization
After the storm, the disciples ask:
“Who is this? Even the wind and waves obey Him!”
They were no longer afraid of the storm…
👉 They were in awe of Jesus
The Bigger Question
This story leads to one of the most important questions in life:
👉 Who is Jesus to you?
A good teacher?
A historical figure?
Or truly Lord?
Why It Matters
If Jesus is:
👉 The Master of the storm
Then:
You are not alone
You are not powerless
You are not without hope
Final Takeaways
1. Storms Are Part of Life
You can’t avoid them—but you’re not alone in them.
2. Jesus Is With You
Even when He feels silent, He is present.
3. Jesus Will Carry You Through
He has done it before—and He will do it again.
4. Trust the Master of the Storm
Peace isn’t found in control—it’s found in Him.
Final Thought
You may not be able to control the storm…
👉 But you can trust the One who controls the storm.
Pastor Steve will continue to part 6 of The Book of Mark this Sunday.
