Amor House Build

Providing a safe space for children

In 1980 Amor Ministries was founded to serve orphans and the homeless in Tijuana. Since then, churches from across San Diego have sent 390,000 individuals to build over 20,000 homes in Mexico. Join us as we plan on how we get involved in the years to come.

It was so wonderful to see the final product, dedicate the house, and present a few housewarming gifts to this wonderful family. We made lifelong friends on the trip and can’t wait to return.

Why did we do this?

Housing and shelter is a desperate need for those living in and around the Tijuana area. This is especially true for families living in rural areas East of Otay. Many of the families in this area are affected by El Nino seasonal flooding and have been without shelter for months or years. This resulted in a tent city, where residents eventually started to use large pieces of styrofoam to house their families. They live in these conditions while working! Finding shelter has been delayed by the pandemic. The particular family that this mission group focused on for their 3-day house build has been waiting for the build since last March. Besides meeting this desperate need, we do this in order to enter into fellowship through ministry with the team that is in the field together. It is an amazing time for growth to work together, in prayer, towards such a meaningful goal.

Making an impact

Prayer, houses built, etc.: This mission trip built a two-bedroom home for an extended family in the Otay area of Tijuana. The family included seven members: a Grandmother, her brother, her daughter, her husband, and their three kids. For the mission team focusing on home, they began with 16 members. A few of the members had to return early. Team worked Day 1 from 9:30am to 4:30pm, Day 2 the same hours, and Day 3 until early afternoon.

Be encouraged

Amor Ministries is a well-oiled machine. They have been conducting these house building trips for decades. Many members who go report similar experiences and similar cadence to what is done on each day. The groups are a mix of new team members and veterans. The tasks that are performed are simple and easy to complete regardless of construction experience. There is someone with ministry experience and construction experience in every group. So many groups are going to the Tijuana area on these trips, that it is fairly easy for members from our church to participate on a monthly basis. Also, Covid protocols are in place. Amor Ministries provides details on their requirements for testing and vaccination. It’s better if at least one person in the group has Global Entry / Sentry Pass to get back across the border quickly.

Amor Ministries’ president is very willing to come and speak to us. Please reach out to Bill or Jesslyn Ponce-Dick if you’d like to hear more.
