The Gospel That Keeps Bearing Fruit (Sermon Blog)
Everyone wants a better life.
Our culture promises happiness through success, possessions, self-improvement, and countless products that claim to make life easier. But in his letter to the Colossians, the apostle Paul points us to something far greater—the Gospel.
Writing from a prison cell, Paul describes a life that continues to bear fruit regardless of circumstances. The Gospel doesn't simply change where we'll spend eternity; it transforms what we believe, how we live, and who we become.
Fruit in What We Believe
One of Paul's concerns for the church in Colossae was that false teaching was beginning to creep in. He reminded believers to stay rooted in the true Gospel, not the messages that simply tell people what they want to hear.
The Gospel produces lasting fruit through three foundational truths:
Faith
Faith is where the Christian life begins.
We place our trust in Jesus Christ—not in ourselves, our accomplishments, or our circumstances.
Hope
Biblical hope isn't wishful thinking. It's the confident expectation of the eternal life Christ has promised.
When our hope is anchored in heaven, we can face today's challenges with confidence and peace.
Love
A life transformed by Christ naturally produces love for God and for others.
Jesus said:
"This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples." (John 15:8)
Faith, hope, and love aren't just beliefs—they're evidence that the Gospel is growing in our lives.
Fruit in How We Live
The Gospel doesn't stop at changing what we believe. It changes the way we live every day.
Paul prayed that believers would continue growing in several key areas:
A Life of Prayer
Paul continually prayed for the church because prayer changes people.
Growing Christians don't simply pray for themselves—they faithfully pray for others.
Knowledge and Wisdom
Knowing God's Word is essential, but knowledge alone isn't enough.
Wisdom is applying God's truth to everyday life.
As we grow in Scripture, we learn to make decisions that honor Christ and reflect His character.
Endurance
Following Jesus isn't always easy.
God strengthens His people so they can faithfully continue even during difficult seasons.
As Galatians reminds us:
"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
Joyful Gratitude
Thankfulness changes our perspective.
Rather than focusing on what we lack, grateful hearts recognize God's faithfulness and celebrate His daily blessings.
Fruit Because of What God Has Done
Ultimately, the greatest fruit of the Gospel isn't something we accomplish—it's the result of what Christ has already done for us.
Paul reminds us that God has:
Rescued us from the dominion of darkness.
Brought us into the Kingdom of His Son.
Redeemed us through Jesus Christ.
Forgiven our sins.
Everything we become flows from what God has first done for us.
The Christian life isn't about earning God's acceptance.
It's living in grateful response to the grace we've already received.
A Personal Fruit Inspection
Jesus never intended His followers to merely know the Gospel.
He calls us to bear fruit.
Take a moment to ask yourself:
Is my faith growing stronger?
Is my hope anchored in Christ?
Is God's love evident in my relationships?
Are my daily choices reflecting the Gospel?
The Gospel that saves us is also the Gospel that continues to shape us.
As we remain rooted in Christ, our lives will bear fruit that brings glory to God and points others to Him.
