Sermon Series: Those Red Letters
Scripture Focus: Matthew 5:1–10

When Jesus began His Sermon on the Mount, He started with what we now call the Beatitudes—a set of blessings that seem to turn the world’s idea of happiness upside down. This message reminds us that true happiness isn’t rooted in external circumstances, but in an internal attitude shaped by God’s Kingdom.

What Is the Be Happy Attitude?

Jesus said, “Blessed are…” eight times in Matthew 5:1–10. The word blessed here can also be translated as happy, but it’s a happiness that runs deeper than a good mood or an easy life. It’s a spiritual joy that comes from being right with God and living in step with His purposes.

Happiness Redefined by Jesus

In the world, happiness is often linked to:

  • Success

  • Wealth

  • Popularity

  • Comfort

But Jesus flips the script. He says people who are poor in spirit, who mourn, who are meek, and who hunger for righteousness are the ones truly blessed.

Why? Because they’re living with the right attitude toward God.

The Beatitudes Teach Us How to Live

Each Beatitude is more than a nice saying—it’s an invitation to adopt a Christlike posture:

  • Poor in Spirit: Recognizing our need for God

  • Those Who Mourn: Grieving over sin and brokenness

  • The Meek: Yielding our strength under God’s control

  • Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness: Desiring what is right in God’s eyes

  • The Merciful: Extending forgiveness and compassion

  • The Pure in Heart: Living with integrity and singleness of purpose

  • The Peacemakers: Working to reconcile and heal

  • The Persecuted: Staying faithful even when it’s hard

How to Grow in the Be Happy Attitude

We grow in these attitudes not by trying harder, but by surrendering more deeply to Jesus. These aren’t personality traits—they are Kingdom characteristics formed in us as we walk with Christ.

Consider these takeaways:

  • Ask God to shape your heart, not just your habits

  • Let Scripture be your mirror—what do you see in the Beatitudes?

  • Embrace challenges as opportunities to grow in Kingdom character

  • Don’t pursue happiness—pursue holiness, and happiness follows

Final Encouragement

The world chases temporary highs. Jesus offers lasting joy. The Be Happy Attitude is not about feeling good, but about being good—good with God, and good toward others, no matter your circumstances.
