Running (Sermon Blog)
Series Launch: We opened our new series Jonah with Pastor Steve’s vivid retelling of Jonah chapter 1—a story that’s more than a children’s fish tale. It’s a mirror for anyone tempted to run from God.
The Story Recapped
Jonah received a clear assignment: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against its wickedness.” Instead, he booked passage in the opposite direction, toward Tarshish.
A violent storm stopped the ship.
Pagan sailors prayed, sacrificed, and eventually tossed Jonah overboard.
God sent a great fish to swallow Jonah, where he remained three days and nights.
This ancient account carries urgent lessons for us today.
What Happens When We Run from God
Pastor Steve highlighted key warning signs:
Silencing God’s Voice – When we drift, we avoid Scripture and prayer, convincing ourselves we don’t need His direction.
Ignoring People Around Us – Relationships suffer; friends and family become “speed bumps” on our self-focused path.
Paying a Higher Price – Running always costs more than expected—emotionally, relationally, even financially.
Storms Will Come – God loves us enough to send circumstances (or people) that force us to face Him.
“Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay.”
What We Can Expect from God
Even in disobedience, God’s mercy is relentless:
Persistent Pursuit – Like a “Hound of Heaven,” God chases us because He loves us.
Interrupting Storms – He uses trials to get our attention and bring us back.
People of Truth – God often sends someone to speak hard but life-giving words when we’re ready to listen.
A Way Back – The great fish wasn’t punishment but protection, a surprising rescue that set Jonah on the right course.
Next Steps for Us
Ask yourself:
Am I running from something God has clearly asked of me?
Is there a storm in my life that might be God calling me back?
Who has permission to speak hard truth into my life?
Running is exhausting—but returning brings peace, purpose, and blessing.
