Meet Stevie
We are excited to introduce you to our new PLC worship leader, Stevie Bombaci. Stevie brings not only a deep love for music, but also a heart for worship and a passion for helping people encounter God through song. Many of you may already know Stevie, but we thought it would be fun to help you get to know him a little better. Recently, Stevie sat down with me for a casual interview to talk about his journey with music, faith, and what excites him about leading worship here at Pacific Life Church.
Stevie, when did you first get into music?
In the 6th grade I started playing bass. In junior high, I joined my first band and played in bands all through high school.
We noticed that you have the same name as the pastor of Pacific Life Church. What’s up with that?
You know, that is an interesting question, and I thought that was a little strange myself. I’m going to have to look into that.
What kinds of music have you enjoyed and played throughout the years?
I started off enjoying rock and roll, and then it just progressed as I got older. In my 20s, I was involved in a metal band and played a few shows with them. I bought a classical guitar a few years back and started learning Beatles songs, John Denver, Elvis, Johnny Cash, etc.
Who are some of the musicians, bands, and artists who have influenced your music?
There are so many artists who have influenced me over the years. I’m a huge fan of John Denver for his amazing vocal range and original folk style. I enjoy the Beatles and can play quite a few of their songs. I also enjoy classical music and have been to many orchestra concerts over the years. Jascha Heifetz is probably one of my favorite musicians of all time. If you’ve never heard of him, look him up—he’s the best example of excellence I can think of in the music world. Frédéric Chopin is my favorite composer and pianist, although I can only listen to his music for so long because it gets pretty depressing, lol.
What are some of the Christian artists you are currently listening to?
For worship music, you have to mention Phil Wickham. I also like Chris Tomlin, David Crowder, and Zach Williams. I grew up listening to the Christian punk rock band Dogwood and then really got into the Christian metal band Living Sacrifice. Switchfoot is a Christian band I’ve listened to growing up and still listen to to this day.
Besides music, what are some other things you enjoy doing?
Surfing would be my all-time favorite sport, although I haven’t been out in a while—shamefully. I golf when I have the time and the money, lol. I’m probably the biggest Padres fan in San Diego. It’s possible that I watch all 162 games a year.
I know you and your wife Jessica are expecting a baby in June. How do you feel about becoming a father?
I’m nervous, but also excited. I just hope I have the energy for it—I already feel like an old man, lol.
What’s your favorite kind of food, as well as your favorite fast food?
I love seafood, Italian food, and Indian food. My favorite fast food would probably have to be Mexican food, especially living in San Diego.
What are your expectations for the PLC worship team?
There is a lot of work to be done. I think the team has come a long way, and I believe it’s sounding better every week as we become more confident. My ultimate goal is to get more people to come through the doors and come to Christ, and I know that can be done through the power of music.
How old are you?
39
What’s your favorite book in the Bible, and is there a verse that means a lot to you?
I would have to say the book of Acts. It’s such an exciting book, and the story of Saul becoming Paul really shows that even the worst people can change. My favorite verse—there are so many—but if I had to choose one, it would be 1 Samuel 17:45–47. David is trash-talking Goliath before he defeats him in battle. It kind of reminds me of the movie Braveheart when William Wallace pumps up his troops before battle—except way more epic. Especially when he says, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, whom you have defied.” It gives me chills every time.
