Life Is Precious
Yesterday my two sons, Stevie and Caleb, plus a good friend of Caleb’s, played in a "CAPS" College Area Pregnancy Services golf tournament to raise money for CAPS. We played on one of the best golf courses in the United States. It all sounds dreamy until you factor in that we played on one of the hottest days of the year. It was so hot that several foursomes came in early. I seriously thought I might pass out around mid-afternoon. As a team we did okay, but the important thing is that we raised around 12 to 13 hundred dollars for CAPS, that was from our team alone. I believe life is precious. I am not pro-choice because the Bible is not pro-choice when it comes to the life of a baby.
In 1975 I was pro-choice. I thought a pregnancy was just a fetus, a mass of cells, and so what difference did it make if a woman aborted her fetus? I thought that way because I was ignorant of the facts both biblically and scientifically. The Bible makes no case for abortion. The only exception was from the Old Testament if the mother’s life was in danger, then they chose the mother's life. Scientifically, we now know that the so-called fetus is more than a clump of cells. Within weeks the body is fully shaped and the baby is kicking around.
CAPS provides free ultrasounds for pregnant women who are making difficult decisions about keeping or not keeping their baby. If a woman decides she wants to abort her baby, CAPS doesn’t condemn her. CAPS doesn’t perform abortions, so the woman would need to go to a place that does perform abortions. However, CAPS continues to pray for the woman and offers counseling after the abortion.
Several people who go to Pacific Life Church are on the CAPS prayer team. The prayer team prays for women before and after their decision, regardless of the decision they make. If they choose to keep the baby, CAPS provides services for the new mom, including diapers and other provisions. When a pregnant woman walks into a CAPS location, there are four locations, she is asked if she would like to see her baby on an ultrasound. Most do, and when they do, things often change. They see a fully formed baby with hands and feet, and they hear a heartbeat.
Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. Before you were born I set you apart.” This speaks to God’s purpose in every human being before and after they are born.
My parents didn’t plan for me. They were barely getting by financially. In today's culture, making a trip to Planned Parenthood might have seemed like the sensible thing to do. I’m so glad they chose to keep me. When Karen was pregnant with our first child, we were dead broke. Abortion was not a consideration. We found a way to make it work. Our daughter Rachel brings more joy to us than we could have ever imagined.
They say it’s a choice, but the baby doesn’t get a choice. God is always on the side of life. Over a million abortions were performed in the U.S., according to the Guttmacher Institute, in 2025. I wonder how many of those aborted babies would have made a contribution to this world? Sadly, we will never know.
If you would like to know more about CAPS, you can either Google CAPS or go to their website at capspregnancyclinics.org.
Thanks to Pacific Life Church for your generosity towards the unborn.
Life is precious,
Steve
