The question, "Who is Jesus?", is the most important question anyone will ever answer. Throughout history, people have viewed Jesus as a great teacher, a prophet, or simply an inspiring man. But the Apostle Paul presents a much greater picture in Colossians 1:15–23. Jesus isn't merely a good man—He is God in the flesh, supreme over all creation, the head of the Church, and the only One who can reconcile us to God.
Why This Matters
Pastor Steve opened with an important reminder: most people have heard of Jesus, but many misunderstand who He truly is. Paul wrote the book of Colossians to confront false teaching that minimized Jesus' identity and to proclaim the truth about His supremacy.
Paul gives us four foundational pillars that reveal exactly who Jesus is.
1. Christ's Supreme Identity
Paul begins by declaring:
"Christ is the visible image of the invisible God."
Jesus is not merely someone who points us to God—He is God revealed in human form.
Throughout Scripture, Jesus consistently identified Himself as divine:
The Word became flesh and lived among us (John 1:14).
"Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father." (John 14:9)
"Before Abraham was born, I AM." (John 8:58)
When Jesus used the name "I AM," His audience immediately understood He was claiming equality with God, which is why they attempted to stone Him.
Many people admire Jesus while rejecting His deity. But we cannot separate Jesus' teachings from His own claims about who He is. If we accept His words, we must also accept that He is fully God.
2. Christ Has Authority Over Creation
Jesus didn't simply enter creation—He created it.
Paul reminds us:
Everything was created through Him.
Everything was created for Him.
He existed before creation.
He continues to hold everything together.
The Gospels repeatedly demonstrate His authority.
When Jesus calmed the storm, the disciples asked,
"What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the waves obey Him!"
The answer is simple: Jesus possesses the authority that belongs only to God.
Because Jesus is God, He is:
All-powerful
All-knowing
Present everywhere
Unchanging
Eternal
Sovereign
This matters because the One we pray to has complete authority over every circumstance in our lives. He isn't a limited teacher or moral example—He is the Creator and Sustainer of everything.
3. Christ Is the Head of the Church
Paul describes the Church as Christ's body, with Jesus as its head.
Every believer belongs to one family regardless of nationality, background, culture, or denomination.
The Church is beautifully diverse because our identity is no longer found in our old labels but in Christ.
As members of His body, we are called to:
Stay connected to Christ.
Encourage one another.
Worship together.
Live as one family.
Remember that Jesus is the source of our life and hope.
4. Christ Is Our Redeemer
The greatest demonstration of Christ's supremacy is His work on the cross.
Paul reminds us that before Christ:
We were far from God.
We were separated by our sin.
We were enemies of God.
But through Jesus' death and resurrection, everything changed.
Because of Christ:
We have been reconciled to God.
Our sins have been forgiven.
We are declared holy and blameless before Him.
We can stand confidently in God's presence—not because of our goodness, but because of His grace.
Don't Drift Away
Paul closes with a loving warning:
Continue to believe the truth. Stand firmly in it. Don't drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News.
Pastor Steve observed that people rarely abandon their faith overnight. More often, it happens through a slow drift.

Confess your sins.
Spend time in prayer.
Read God's Word consistently.
Stay connected through Christian fellowship.
Worship God with your whole heart.
Final Thoughts
Who we believe Jesus to be shapes everything about our faith.
If Jesus is only a wise teacher, His influence is limited. But if Jesus truly is God, then He deserves our complete trust, wholehearted worship, and lifelong obedience.
Paul's message in Colossians reminds us that Jesus is supreme over creation, supreme over the Church, and supreme over our salvation. He alone has the authority to forgive our sins, reconcile us to God, and give us eternal life.
