Heart Check (Sermon Blog)
As we continue in The Book of Mark, Jesus tells one of His most well-known parables—the Parable of the Sower. On the surface, it’s a simple story about seeds and soil.
But at its core…
👉 It’s a story about the condition of our hearts.
The question Jesus is really asking is:
👉 What kind of soil are you?
1. The Issue Isn’t the Seed—It’s the Soil
God Is Generous with His Word
In the parable, a farmer scatters seed everywhere:
On the path
On rocky ground
Among thorns
On good soil
The key insight:
👉 The problem is not the seed
👉 The problem is not the sower
👉 The issue is the soil
The seed represents God’s Word—and it’s being spread generously all around us.
God Is Speaking—Are We Listening?
God speaks in many ways:
Through Scripture
Through people
Through circumstances
Through the Holy Spirit
But Jesus emphasizes something important:
👉 Listening isn’t just hearing—it’s responding
You can hear truth… and still do nothing with it.
2. Three Heart Conditions That Block Growth
Jesus describes three unhealthy types of soil—three heart conditions that prevent spiritual growth.
1. The Hard Heart (Unreceptive)
This is the heart that hears—but doesn’t receive.
Pride says, “I don’t need this”
Distraction says, “I’m too busy”
Indifference says, “This doesn’t matter”
Jesus says the word gets taken away quickly.
👉 Nothing ever takes root
2. The Shallow Heart (No Roots)
This is the heart that responds quickly—but doesn’t last.
Initial excitement
Emotional response
But no deep foundation
When life gets difficult:
Pressure comes
Faith fades
Commitment disappears
👉 Without roots, growth doesn’t last
3. The Crowded Heart (Choked)
This is the heart that receives—but gets overwhelmed.
Jesus describes it clearly:
Worries of life
Deceitfulness of wealth
Desire for other things
None of these are necessarily evil…
👉 But they crowd out what matters most
Common “thorns” today:
Busyness
Career pressure
Comfort and convenience
Screen time and distraction
👉 Slowly, they choke spiritual life
3. A Healthy Heart Produces Fruit
The Good Soil
The final soil is different.
It:
Hears the Word
Accepts it
Responds to it
And the result?
👉 A fruitful life
30x
60x
100x
God’s desire isn’t just that we believe…
👉 It’s that our lives produce something meaningful
You Don’t Have to Stay Where You Are
Here’s the good news:
👉 Your heart condition is not permanent
Hard hearts can soften
Shallow hearts can grow deeper
Crowded hearts can be cleared
4. How Do We Cultivate a Healthy Heart?
It Starts with Humility
The process begins with:
Repentance
Honesty
Surrender
Scripture calls it:
👉 “Breaking up the unplowed ground”
Practical Steps
1. Hear the Word
Be intentional about listening to God.
2. Accept the Word
Don’t resist—receive it openly.
3. Respond to the Word
Let it change your actions.
Obedience Unlocks Understanding
One of the most powerful truths from this message:
👉 You won’t fully understand until you step into obedience
It may feel uncomfortable
It may not make sense at first
But once you act…
👉 Everything begins to click
Final Takeaways
1. Check Your Heart
The condition of your heart determines your growth.
2. Don’t Just Hear—Respond
Listening means taking action.
3. Remove What Crowds God Out
Busyness and distraction can quietly choke your faith.
4. Pursue Deep Roots
A lasting faith requires depth, not just emotion.
Final Thought
God is constantly planting truth in your life.
The question is:
👉 What kind of soil is your heart becoming?
Pastor Steve will continue to part 5 of The Book of Mark this Sunday.
