Future Glory (Sermon Blog)
Over the past several weeks, we’ve been walking through the book of Romans.
Romans 7 showed us the struggle we face with sin and the hope we have in Christ.
Romans 8:1-14 reminded us there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus and that we now live empowered by the Spirit.
This week, in Romans 8:15-39, Paul takes us deeper into the hope and assurance we have in Christ — both now and in the future.
The Romans Road to Salvation
If someone asked you why you follow Jesus, the “Romans Road” offers a clear, step-by-step answer straight from Scripture:
Our Need for a Savior – “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23
The Cost of Sin – “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” – Romans 6:23
God’s Love for Us – “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8
How to Be Saved – “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” – Romans 10:9-10
The Promise – “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” – Romans 10:13
The Result – “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” – Romans 8:1
These verses give us a powerful and simple way to explain the good news to anyone seeking hope.
Why Be a Christian? Three Reasons from Romans 8:15-17
From here, Paul outlines three life-changing realities for every believer:
Freedom from Fear – “You have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves.” In Christ, we are no longer bound by the fears that grip this world.
A New Family – We are adopted as God’s children and can call Him Abba, Father. The Holy Spirit unites believers into a family that loves, supports, and prays for one another.
An Eternal Inheritance – As co-heirs with Christ, we have a future glory that far outweighs anything in this life.
Suffering with Purpose – Romans 8:18-25
Paul is honest — following Christ includes seasons of suffering. But for the believer, suffering is never meaningless.
“What we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory He will reveal to us later.” – Romans 8:18
All creation is “groaning” under the curse of sin, longing for the day of full restoration.
We, too, long for the redemption of our bodies — the day when sickness, pain, and death are no more.
In Christ, we can endure hardship knowing it leads to eternal joy.
Help in Our Weakness – Romans 8:26-28
Even when we don’t know what to pray, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us according to God’s will.
“We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28
God’s goodness doesn’t mean everything will be easy — but it does mean everything will have purpose.
Chosen, Called, and Secure – Romans 8:29-39
Paul closes with one of the most powerful declarations in all of Scripture:
God knew us in advance, chose us, and gave us right standing through Christ.
If God is for us, no one can stand against us.
Nothing — not trouble, hardship, persecution, or even death — can separate us from His love.
“I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love… indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8:38-39
Takeaway
Why follow Jesus? Because in Him we have freedom from fear, a new family, an eternal inheritance, purpose in suffering, the Spirit’s help, and unshakable security in God’s love.
