Finish Well! (Sermon Blog)
Special Guest Speaker: Pastor Darrel Larson
What does it mean to finish well?
Many people start strong, but staying faithful over the long haul is often the greatest challenge. In this encouraging message, Pastor Darrel Larson reminds us that following Jesus is not a sprint—it's a lifelong journey. Like the Apostle Paul, we're called to run with purpose, remain faithful through every season, and finish the race well.
Run with Purpose
Paul compares the Christian life to a race, encouraging believers to "run to win." Finishing well doesn't happen by accident—it requires intentionality, discipline, and perseverance.
Rather than drifting through life, we're called to live each day with purpose, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus and faithfully following Him every step of the way.
Offer Your Everyday Life to God
One of the central passages of the message comes from Romans 12, where Paul encourages believers to present their entire lives to God.
Following Jesus isn't just about Sunday mornings. It's about offering our:
Work
Family life
Friendships
Decisions
Conversations
Everyday routines
Everything becomes an act of worship when it's surrendered to God.
Don't Let Culture Shape You
Pastor Darrel challenged us with one of Romans 12's strongest warnings:
"Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking."
Culture slowly influences the way we think, speak, and live. Instead of allowing the world to shape us, we're called to let God's Word transform us from the inside out.
A helpful question to ask is:
Am I leading others closer to Jesus, or are they leading me farther away from Him?
Stay Connected to the Body of Christ
God never intended us to follow Him alone.
Using the illustration of the human body, Pastor Darrel reminded us that every believer has a unique role to play. Just as a thumb has little purpose apart from the body, Christians flourish when they're connected to Christ and His Church.
Being part of a church family allows us to:
Encourage one another
Serve together
Grow spiritually
Use our gifts to bless others
Finish the race alongside fellow believers
Live Out Your Faith Every Day
Romans 12 provides practical instructions for everyday living.
Pastor Darrel highlighted several ways we can faithfully represent Christ:
Serve others with humility.
Encourage rather than control.
Care for those in need.
Love sincerely.
Refuse to repay evil for evil.
Practice hospitality.
Don't burn out—care for your physical and spiritual health.
Bless your enemies and overcome evil with good.
These aren't simply good ideas—they're habits that help us remain faithful for the long haul.
Never Let Your Past Define You
As the message concluded, Pastor Darrel offered one final encouragement:
Never let Satan define your past. Let Jesus define your past.
Because of Christ, our failures have been forgiven, our lives have been redeemed, and our future is secure.
Instead of comparing ourselves to others, we should simply ask:
"What would I think of my progress if I'd never seen anyone else's?"
Faithfulness isn't measured by someone else's journey—it's measured by our willingness to keep walking with Jesus every day.
Final Thoughts
Finishing well isn't about perfection.
It's about faithfully following Jesus one day at a time—staying close to Him, remaining connected to His people, and allowing His grace to shape our lives until the very end.
